Help those in need!
If you can spare a few bucks, I encourage you to donate them to the American Red Cross Hurricane 2005 relief fund. The scenes from New Orleans and vicinity are truly horrific, and if you can help, please do! You can donate directly on the Red Cross website or through Amazon.com -- it's so easy even I was able to do it! We have over 2 million visitors a month, so we can really make a difference!

  Kodak EasyShare-One coming in October
From the strange timing department, Kodak today announced their their EasyShare-One camera will be available this October for $599. This compact camera features a 4 Megapixel CCD, 3X optical zoom lens, 3-inch LCD, and wireless photo transfer to Kodak's EasyShare Gallery via Wi-Fi.

  Nikon Coolpix P1/P2
Nikon today introduced a whole bunch of new Coolpix cameras. The two most interesting are the Coolpix P1 and P2, which are the first consumer cameras to ship with built-in Wi-Fi! Now you can take pictures and beam them right to your computer, even as you take them. What impressed me during my demo a few weeks ago was how you can dynamically add to a slideshow running on your PC by sending photos right from the camera. Anyhow, here's the info on these two:

Coolpix P1

  • 8.0 Megapixel CCD
  • F2.7-5.2, 3.5X optical zoom lens, equivalent to 36 - 126 mm
  • Built-in 802.11b/g Wi-Fi: images can be sent to Nikon Picture Project or to a PictBridge-enabled photo printer with Nikon's optional Wi-Fi adapter ($50); photos can be transmitted as they're taken or in playback mode; wireless settings are created on the computer so you don't have to try to enter the SSID on the camera itself (phew)
  • 2.5" LCD display
  • Compact black-colored body
  • 32MB onboard memory + SD/MMC card slot
  • AF-assist lamp
  • Limited manual controls: there's an aperture priority mode; not sure about white balance or focus
  • Has all of the usual Nikon features: In-camera redeye reduction, Best Shot Selector, Face Priority AF, and D-Lighting digital flash
  • Records movies at 640 x 480 (30 frames/second) with sound
  • Tons of scene modes
  • Uses EN-EL8 rechargeable li-ion battery; 180 shots per charge (CIPA standard)
  • USB 2.0 High Speed support
  • PictBridge-enabled
  • Ships this month for $550

Coolpix P2  - same as above except:

  • 5.1 Megapixel CCD
  • 16MB of on-board memory
  • Comes in silver instead of black
  • Battery life rises to 200 shots per charge
  • Priced at $400

  Nikon Coolpix L1
Next up we have the Coolpix L1, a compact camera with more zoom than most of the competition. The specs:

Coolpix L1

  • 6.0 Megapixel CCD
  • F2.9-5.0, 5X optical zoom lens, equivalent to 38 - 190 mm
  • 2.5" LCD display
  • AF-assist lamp
  • 10MB on-board memory + SD/MMC card slot
  • Point-and-shoot operation

  • Uses two AA batteries
  • PictBridge-enabled
  • Ships this month for $350

  Nikon Coolpix S4
The new Coolpix S4 marks the return of Nikon's fabled swiveling lens design -- I know a lot of you have missed it! This one's even an ultra zoom camera of sorts:

  Nikon Coolpix S3
The last new Nikon is the Coolpix S3 (yes, I'm going out of order here), which is a 6 Megapixel version of the Coolpix S1. Here are its specs:
